Mr Berlusconi’s main opponent, Walter Veltroni, will lead a new, broad party of the centre-left; but Mr Berlusconi will run at the head of his familiar, habitually quarrelsome, four-party coalition. Mr Veltroni is 52; his opponent is a septuagenarian with a pacemaker.
